Bono has been discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) Hospital in Munich where he underwent emergency surgery on Friday. According to Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt, “Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve. On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery with Professor Tonn at Munich's LMU University Hospital on Friday.”
According to Professor Tonn, the surgeon who performed the operation, Bono already had severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. They found an 8mm tear in the ligament surrounding the disc, and discovered fragments of the disc that had traveled into the spinal canal.
The surgery went well, and Bono will make a full recovery, but requires an extended period of rehabilitation before he can take to the stage again. A minimum of eight weeks is required for him to recover full health, and the hospital says that they treat Bono as they would any athlete patient.
